About Us
Hi! I'm Jenny, and I'm a Ragdoll breeder now located
in Arizona. More about me coming soon!
What is a Ragdoll?
Many
people ask me what breeds were used to develop the Ragdoll.
Ragdolls
are not a mix of any recognized breed of cat. They were developed in
the 1960's by Ann Baker, a breeder in California. She bred
"Josephine", a loving, gentle, longhaired white female carrying
"Siamese markings" to other longhaired cats carrying "Siamese
markings". Her original stock consisted of sturdy, free-roaming
cats. By selecting individuals with the look she wanted for her
breeding program, she created the type standard for the Ragdoll.
Ragdolls come in three patterns and several colors. The patterns are
based on the distribution of white or the lack of white markings.
The Colorpoint Ragdoll has no white markings.
The Mitted Ragdoll has white "mitts" on its front paws, white
"boots" in the back
and a white chin. They may also have a star or blaze on the face,
but
it shouldn't extend through the nose leather.
The Bicolor Ragdoll has the most white. They have a white inverted
'V' on their faces with the white not to extend past the outside
corner of the eye. The white on their front legs should come up to
the elbow and the back legs are white.
The color of a Ragdoll is based on the color of the 'points': ears,
face, legs, and tail. I breed only the traditional seal and blue
point Ragdolls, but they also come in flame (red), cream, chocolate,
and lilac, and some have stripes through the point color which is
called the lynx point. There are now tortoiseshell and tortie with
lynx (torbie point) Ragdolls. When you describe a Ragdoll you use
the color and the pattern such as: Seal point mitted or Blue point
bicolor.
